Stage 1

(Video in German only)

In stage 1, suitable site regions were identified on the basis of safety and geological criteria. Nagra identified three site regions for high-level and six for low and intermediate level radioactive waste. The Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate then examined and confirmed these regions. The identified site regions were: Jura Ost, Nördlich Lägern and Zürich Nordost (each for both waste categories), and Jura Südfuss, Südranden and Wellenberg (each for low and intermediate level waste only). All six site regions were approved by the Federal Council and adopted into the sectoral plan. At the end of stage 1, regional conferences were established to permit the participation of the proposed site regions.
