Stage 2

(Video in German only)

In stage 2, the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) had to propose at least two site regions per waste category (i.e. low and intermediate level and high-level radioactive waste) to be studied in detail in stage 3. Nagra proposed Jura Ost and Zürich Nordost as site regions in each of which the storage of both categories of waste would be feasible. The Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate reviewed this decision and announced that Nördlich Lägern should also be more closely examined. This view was also shared by the Federal Commission for Nuclear Waste Disposal. Thus at the end of 2018 the Federal Council decided that the procedure is to be continued in stage 3 with those three selected regions. In stage 2, in addition to narrowing down the selection, Nagra worked closely together with the proposed site regions in order to identify and designate potential sites for housing the surface facilities. In addition, a study of the socioeconomic and ecological impacts of a deep geological repository on the proposed site regions was carried out.
