The Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) carries out a number of essential tasks for the enforcement of Swiss legislation on nuclear energy. These include preparing permits for nuclear power plants, for storage facilities for radioactive waste and for geological investigations for the attention of the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC).
The SFOE runs the secretariat of the Swiss Federal Workgroup for Radioactive Waste Disposal. In addition, it is responsible for implementing the Deep Geological Repository sectoral plan and conducting the site selection procedure.
The SFOE issues permits for the transport of nuclear fuels and radioactive waste and is responsible for the correct application of the legal provisions on ensuring the necessary funding for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities and the disposal of radioactive waste. It is also responsible for carrying out national controlling and keeping detailed records of nuclear fuels as well as other tasks arising from Switzerland’s bilateral and multilateral obligations in the context of the nuclear fuel cycle and controls on the export of nuclear goods.
The Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (FNSI), an independent public-law body of the federal government, is responsible for supervising the safety aspects of Swiss nuclear facilities.
