Switzerland makes important contribution to IAEA's applied nuclear research

Bern, 20.06.2024 - On 20 and 21 June, Najat Mokhtar, Deputy Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will visit Eawag and Spiez Laboratory, where she will hear about their contributions to applied nuclear research.

Switzerland is strongly involved in applied nuclear research and works closely with the IAEA. For example, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology (Eawag) has a Practical Arrangement with the IAEA on cooperation in groundwater research, the aim of which is to support the sustainable use of groundwater resources in countries in the southern hemisphere.

Spiez Laboratory has already been twice designated an IAEA Collaborating Centre for the analysis of radionuclides in environmental samples. In this context its work includes taking on-site measurements, sampling and establishing analytical methods. Spiez Laboratory is also a member of the IAEA's ALMERA network (Analytical Laboratories for the Measurement of Environmental Radioactivity).

Ms Mokhtar's visit is being arranged by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy in cooperation with the Swiss mission to the IAEA in Vienna.
