The main task of the Safeguards Section is to ensure the fulfillment of all obligations arising from the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement (CSA) and the Additional Protocol (AP) to the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA, an independent agency within the United Nations Organization) for the entire territory of Switzerland. Through an agreement with the Principality of Liechtenstein, Switzerland also assumes the same supervisory tasks for the Principality.
The focus of these activities is the accounting for and control of nuclear material with subsequent reporting to the IAEA. Correctness and completeness of the reported information are verified through inspections by the IAEA and SFOE.
