Facilities and Locations Outside Facilities subject to safeguards

The following facilities are under safeguards in Switzerland:

  • Beznau nuclear power plant (KKB) – units 1 and 2
  • Gösgen nuclear power plant (KKG)
  • Leibstadt nuclear power plant (KKL)
  • Mühleberg nuclear power plant (KKM) (under decommissioning)
  • Interim storage facility for radioactive waste at Beznau nuclear power plant (ZWIBEZ)
  • Interim storage facility for radioactive waste in Würenlingen (ZWILAG)
  • Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire in Geneva (CERN) – International Research Institute
  • Research reactor CROCUS at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL)
  • The following facilities at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen (PSI)
    • Radioactive waste management facilities (AERA)
    • Facility for research activities in the field of highly radioactive materials (Hotlab)
    • Research reactor PROTEUS (under decommissioning)
       

In addition, there are other locations outside those facilities mentioned above, where small quantities of materials subject to safeguards are handled. These are referred to as Location Outside Facilities (LOF) and generally correspond to companies or institutions in the fields of medicine, industry or research and education.
