Site proposal by the Nagra

Nagra announced its proposal for the site of the deep geological repository on 12 September 2022. Based on its numerous investigations over the past few years in the siting regions of Jura Ost, Nördlich Lägern and Zürich Nordost, it has decided that Nördlich Lägern is the most suitable site. A deep repository for both high-level and low- and intermediate-level waste (combined repository) is to be built there. Nagra plans to build the facilities for packaging the waste at the interim storage facility in Würenlingen. The announcement was made for reasons of transparency. Over the next two years, Nagra will continue to prepare the details of the repository project in collaboration with the stakeholders and submit the general licence applications for the deep geological repository at Nördlich Lägern and the waste packaging facilities at the interim storage facility in Würenlingen to the SFOE in 2024. This will be followed by a detailed review by ENSI and other authorities. A consultation will be carried out once the expert opinions and statements are available (approx. 2027). The Federal Council is expected to decide around 2029 whether to approve Nagra's proposal. This decision must be approved by Parliament. A referendum can subsequently be requested against the decision.

Once the legally valid general licences have been obtained, further underground geological investigations will be carried out from 2035. The construction of the storage facility for low and intermediate level waste (L / ILW) is planned from 2045 onwards, and the construction of the storage facility for high-level waste (HLW) from 2055 onwards. The L/ILW repository is scheduled to come on stream in 2050 and the HLW repository in 2060.
