The federal government's Energy Perspectives report provides an essential foundation for shaping medium- and long-term energy and climate policy. It sets out scenarios for how the energy system could develop over the medium term (10–15 years) and long term (20–40 years), presented as if-then analyses. These potential scenarios are not forecasts but rather tools that form the basis for draft legislation, support actors within and outside the Federal Administration, and inform policy decisions on long-term electricity supply security, grid development and long-term climate strategies.
The Energy Perspectives 2050+ report, published at the end of 2020, no longer adequately reflects the rapid changes across the energy sector. New population scenarios, economic forecasts and transport projections have emerged since then, making an update essential. The new Energy Perspectives will tackle a critical question: how can we meet the surging demand for electricity driven by the widespread electrification of heating and transport systems? Various electricity supply scenarios will be examined to address this challenge.
In mid-2025, a consortium led by Prognos AG was commissioned to develop Energy Perspectives 2060. The consortium brings together expertise from TEP Energy GmbH, Infras AG, Buildings and Dwellings Statistics (BDS), PSI, Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences (OST) and Meteotest. A technical advisory group of representatives from several federal offices and professional associations will support the project. The results are expected towards the end of 2027.
