Control over the peaceful use of nuclear energy

The Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) is responsible for the national accounting for and control of nuclear material, as well as for other supervisory activities and tasks arising from Switzerland's bilateral and multilateral commitments in the context of nuclear non-proliferation, export control of nuclear goods and the nuclear fuel cycle.

Safeguards

The main task of the Safeguards Section is to ensure the fulfillment of all obligations arising from the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement.

Export Control

Within export control, the Safeguards Section acts as technical advisor to the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and to the Nuclear Energy Legal Section of SFOE when granting licences for exports of nuclear goods or their technology.

Bilateral agreements

As of today Switzerland has seven different bilateral agreements in force that regulate and facilitate cooperation in the development and utilization of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

Other activities

The Safeguards Section manages reporting activities arising from other national or international obligations.
