Biomass is a renewable energy source which can be transformed into several forms of energy: heat, electricity, biogas or liquid fuels. The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research has quantified and located the potential of important biomass resources in Switzerland. Biomass can generally be stored and can therefore be used to offset inconsistent wind and solar energy production. The maps show the sustainable potential of woody and non-woody biomass for bioenergy in Switzerland at communal level.
