First call of the new energy research programme SWEET launched
Bern, 25.06.2020 - The Swiss Federal Office of Energy has launched the first call for proposals within the new energy research programme SWEET (Swiss Energy Research for the Energy Transition). The main theme of this call, which has a total budget of 30 million Swiss francs, is “Integration of Renewables into a Sustainable and Resilient Swiss Energy System". Research consortia from universities, non-profit research institutions, the private sector and the public sector can apply until 12 October 2020.
In the first call for proposals, 4 research challenges have been defined:
Research challenge 1: Improve renewable energy system efficiency through flexibility and sector coupling
Research challenge 2: Integration of decentralized supply of renewable energy into the Swiss energy system
Research challenge 3: Enabling renewables for heating and cooling
Research challenge 4: Sustainability at the heart of a resilient Swiss energy system
A maximum of one consortium per challenge will be selected and funded. The maximum funding is 8 million Swiss francs for research challenges 1 to 3 and 6 million Swiss francs for research challenge 4.
Research challenges are to be addressed and answered in a trans- and interdisciplinary manner. To this end, the consortia establish portfolios of interrelated projects. The term of a consortium project is between 6 and 8 years. The results of the first call for proposals will be announced in January 2021 and the first research work will start in spring 2021.

Energy research programme SWEET (Swiss Energy Research for the Energy Transition)
SWEET will conduct rolling calls for consortium projects. The last projects will be completed in 2032. Only consortium projects that comprehensively address central research topics of the Energy Strategy 2050 will be funded. SWEET focuses on application-oriented research and the demonstration of the results achieved. SWEET is managed by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE).
