Supply
Renewable energy
Switzerland is actively encouraging the development of renewable forms of energy.
Electricity supply
Switzerland’s electricity supply to end-users is secured by more than 600 companies, ranging from small regional suppliers to large international energy groups.
The Federal Gas Supply Act
The draft version of the Federal Gas Supply Act underwent consultation from October 2019 to February 2020. With the new Act, gas supply and the gas market in Switzerland will be governed by a standardised and stable set of rules.
Hydrogen and Power-to-X
Climate-neutral and renewable hydrogen is particularly important for achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 as it is produced from water in an electrolyser using renewable electricity.
2050 Heating Strategy
A possible path toward a climate-neutral heating sector.
Nuclear energy
Four nuclear power plants are currently in operation in Switzerland. Mühleberg is currently being decommissioned.
Fossil fuels
Fossil fuels, in particular oil-based fuels, account for approximately three quarters of total energy consumption and are thus still important. With the Federal Council’s decision to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, fossil fuels will have to be replaced by renewable energy, in particular electricity, or consumption will have to be significantly reduced.
Energy efficiency
Energy efficiency means using energy as effectively and economically as possible. It is an important pillar of Switzerland’s energy strategy.
Supervision and Safety
The Supervision and Safety (ASI) division is responsible for all duties of the SFOE in the areas of supervision and risk and safety management.
