Legal basis

The Federal Statistics Act (FStatA) and the Federal Statistics Ordinance (FStatO) provide the legal basis for the compilation of energy statistics. The factsheets for each set of statistics describe the individual surveys and findings of the energy statistics (Art. 10 FStatO).

The Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) is part of the Swiss statistical system. In signing the Charter of Swiss Official Statistics, the SFOE has committed to the Charter’s high quality standards in the compilation of energy statistics.

• Swiss statistical system and Charter

  The Swiss statistical system consists of a network of approximately 40 federal offices and other institutions subject to the Federal Statistics Act. The majority of cantons and several larger towns and cities have their own regional statistical services.

  The producers of official statistics have an obligation under the Federal Statistics Act to maintain professional independence and impartiality in the production and dissemination of official statistics. Statistical data supports the political process by providing a foundation for informed public debate, policy and decision-making.

  The Federal Statistical Office plays a coordinating role at federal level as a centre of expertise and hub in Switzerland’s decentralised data ecosystem.

  The Charter of Swiss Official Statistics (the Charter) is a professional code of practice that complements existing legal requirements and serves as a common quality framework for self-regulation within official statistics.
