Deep Geological Repositories Sectoral Plan
(Video in German only)
The search for deep geological repositories sites is regulated in the Sectoral Plan for Deep Geological Repositories. It is carried out in three stages, in which the selection of siting regions is gradually narrowed down. At the end of each stage, the Federal Council decides how to proceed. The Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) bears overall responsibility for the procedure. The safety of people and the environment is our top priority. The participatory nature of the sectoral plan enables the local population, the communes, the cantons and neighbouring countries to be involved at an early stage.
Sectoral plan
The federal government uses a sectoral plan to coordinate tasks of national importance with a spatial impact in a single procedure. It works together with the cantonal and communal authorities and takes their concerns into account.
