Overview of cantonal guidance planning regarding renewable energies

The Federal Energy Act provides for the use of all forms of renewable energy in Switzerland. In their guidelines, the cantons are in particular required to designate areas for the use of hydropower and wind energy. To date, however, a country-wide overview of the areas designated by the cantons for the use of renewable energy does not exist in their guidance planning. In 2019, therefore, the Swiss Federal Office of Energy and the Federal Office for Spatial Development decided to launch a project to create a database for this purpose. The project has since been concluded and the results are available for use by cantonal and federal authorities. The data are updated annually.
