The Federal Workgroup for Nuclear Waste Disposal (Agneb) was set up by the Federal Council in 1978 and is responsible for monitoring activities in the area of nuclear waste disposal. It formulates statements of position for the attention of the Federal Council and deals with issues relating to international waste disposal.
The workgroup comprises representatives from the supervisory (Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate), licensing (Swiss Federal Office of Energy), public health (Federal Office of Public Health), environmental (Federal Office for the Environment) and spatial planning (Federal Office for Spatial Development) authorities, as well as from the Federal Office of Topography (swisstopo) and the Paul Scherrer Institute (research). Representatives of the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Nuclear Waste (Nagra) are invited as experts on a case by case basis.
Each year, the workgroup submits a report to the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) on the most important activities in the field of nuclear waste disposal in Switzerland.
