Stage 2

(Video in German only)

In stage 2, the task of the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) was to propose at least two geological siting areas per waste category (for high-level and low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste). Nagra proposed Jura Ost and Zürich Nordost as geological siting areas in which one repository for each waste category of radioactive waste or a single repository for both categories would be feasible. Following its detailed study, the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate came to the conclusion that, in addition to the two proposed geological siting areas, Nördlich Lägern should also be further examined. This view was shared by the Federal Nuclear Safety Commission. Following a public consultation, stage 2 will be concluded with a decision by the Federal Council. In stage 2, in addition to narrowing down the number of geological siting areas, Nagra worked closely together with the proposed siting regions in order to identify and designate locations for the placement of the surface facilities. The siting regions were also evaluated on the basis of socio-economic and ecological criteria and compared with one another. The findings were summarised in a socio-economic and ecological impacts study.

The proposal submitted to the Federal Council is that Jura Ost, Nördlich Lägern and Zürich Nordost be examined in greater detail in stage 3.
