Stage 1

(Video in German only)

In stage 1, the main focus was on identifying suitable geological siting areas based on safety-related and geological criteria. During this stage, the National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) proposed three geological siting areas for high-level and six for low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste, which were then reviewed and confirmed by the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate: Jura Ost (both waste categories), Jura-Südfuss (low- and intermediate-level), Nördlich Lägern (both waste categories), Südranden (low- and intermediate-level), Wellenberg (low- and intermediate-level), Zürich Nordost (both waste categories). Following a three-month public consultation, the six geological siting areas were approved by the Federal Council and incorporated into the sectoral plan. At the end of stage 1, regional conferences were established to facilitate the regional participation of the proposed siting regions.
