Important Swiss providers of publicly relevant services jointly report on their energy consumption in 2021 and the targets for 2030
Bern, 31.08.2022 - The Exemplary Energy and Climate initiative was launched into the new 2021–2030 phase with 15 participants and three broad targets. The 2021 report shows participants' energy consumption in the previous year and lists their individual targets up to 2026 and 2030. Direct greenhouse gas emissions are now also recorded. On 5 September, the initiative will also celebrate new participants and commitments at its annual event in Geneva.
In 2021, the participants in the initiative consumed around 6,500GWh of final energy and caused 540,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions from energy use (CO2eq). This corresponds to 3% of Switzerland's final energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from energy use. In the same period, 35% of the fuel and 93% of the electricity came from renewable sources. Over the coming years, the participants aim to increase the share of renewable electricity to 100%. They are also continuously increasing the renewable share of fuels with individual targets. For example, in 2021 the participants replaced 179 heating systems with ecological models or installed new ones.
Ecological electricity production
SIG produced 730GWh from certified 'naturemade star' or equivalent hydropower. Collectively the 15 participants produced 36GWh of solar power. The electricity generated annually from photovoltaic systems is expected to increase by an additional 82GWh by 2026. In addition to these targets for the use and production of renewable energies, the participants have individually agreed energy efficiency targets.
Common and individual targets
Fifty-six new individual measures tailored to the participants, such as improving the energy efficiency of the large-scale research facility SLS 2.0 (Paul Scherrer Institute), the use of natural refrigerants (SBB) and the analysis of the carbon footprint of television production (SRG SSR), complement 15 joint measures in the areas of management, procurement and operations.
About the initiative
The fifteen major Swiss providers of publicly relevant services - Swiss Post (including PostBus and PostFinance), the ETH Domain, Flughafen Zürich AG, Geneva Airport, SBB, RUAG MRO Holding Ltd, SIG, Skyguide, SRG SSR, Suva, Swisscom, the Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) and the Federal Civil Administration - contribute to the Energy Strategy 2050 and the Paris Climate Agreement of 2015 in the Exemplary Energy and Climate initiative. The companies are continuously improving their energy efficiency and switching to renewable energies. They provide transparent reporting on their target achievement and share their experiences for the benefit of other companies and organisations. The Exemplary Energy and Climate initiative was launched in 2013 with initial targets for 2020. The new targets run until 2030.
New participants and commitments at the annual event on 5 September
New participants and commitments will be introduced and celebrated at the annual event at HEPIA in Geneva on 5 September. Geneva is the first canton to join the initiative, with the seven cantonal institutions FIDP (the Geneva Public Real Estate Foundations), FTI (Geneva Industrial Parks Foundation), HES-SO (Geneva University of Applied Sciences), Hospice Général (Geneva Social Welfare Office), OCEN (Cantonal Office of Energy), OCBA (Cantonal Public Works Office) and tpg (Geneva Public Transport). In addition, the federal pension fund PUBLICA, Suva and the SBB pension fund are committed to making their financial flows more climate-friendly as part of the initiative.
