In stage 2 the focus is on participation: the proposed siting regions have an opportunity to participate in the specification of the repository projects and in studies on the socio-economic effects and spatial planning impacts. The regional consultation procedure is central to stage 2. The sites also have to be compared from the point of view of safety before the National Co-operative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) can propose at least two sites per waste category.
Stage 2: Selection of at least 2 sites
With the assistance of the siting regions, Nagra draws up proposals for the layout and design of the surface infrastructure and the arrangement of the underground components, and selects at least one site per region. For each potential site Nagra carries out preliminary safety assessments and safety comparisons before it proposes at least two sites each for low and intermediate level waste and high-level waste.
