Stage 1

The main focus of stage one is on identifying suitable siting areas based on safety and geological criteria. The supervisory authorities (Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate and the Federal Nuclear Safety Commission) have confirmed the six geological areas proposed by Nagra. Regional conferences were set up in five siting regions for the population and the communes. The results of stage 1 have been approved by the Federal Council and adopted into the sectoral plan.

In October 2008, the National Co-operative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) proposed potential geological areas on the basis of safety criteria (see map under "Documentation"). The federal State (Swiss Confederation) constituted a body consisting of representatives of the siting cantons, neighbouring cantons and States (Commission of Cantons).

The supervisory authorities (Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate, the Federal Nuclear Safety Commission) have checked safety-related aspects of the proposed sites and come to the conclusion that Nagra's choice of sites is reasonable and feasible.

For this reason a consultation procedure was instigated by the SFOE between 1 September and 30 November 2010 to which 3,700 people and parties responded. The results of stage 1 have been approved by the Federal Council and adopted into the sectoral plan.
