Swiss Federal Workgroup for Nuclear Waste Disposal

The Swiss Federal Workgroup for Nuclear Waste Disposal (Agneb), a body created by the Federal Council in 1978, monitors the activities relating to the disposal of radioactive nuclear waste in Switzerland. It prepares statements on behalf of the Federal Council and deals with questions about international waste disposal.

The workgroup comprises representatives from the supervisory authority (Swiss Federal Nuclear safety Inspectorate), the licensing authority (Swiss Federal Office of Energy), the public health authority (Swiss Federal Office for Public Health), the environmental protection authority (Swiss Federal Office for the Environment) and the spatial planning authority (Swiss Federal Office for Spatial Development), as well as from "swisstopo" (Swiss Federal Office of Topography) and the research sector (Paul Scherrer Institute). Specialists from the National Co-operative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) are consulted on a case-by-case basis.

The workgroup reports to the Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) on an annual basis about progress in the waste disposal sector in Switzerland.
