The Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) is responsible for waste produced from the healthcare sector, industry and research. The FOPH issues the necessary permits, supervises the facilities involved, ensures compliance with radiation protection regulations and monitors levels of radioactivity in the environment.

Since 1980, the FOPH has organised an annual collection campaign for radioactive waste from the healthcare sector, and from industry and research. This material is converted into a form suitable for disposal in a deep geological repository, and deposited in the interim storage facility operated by the federal State (Swiss Confederation).
