The safe disposal of radioactive waste is the responsibility of those operators who produce it, namely BKW FMB Energie AG, KKW Gösgen-Däniken AG, KKW Leibstadt AG, Axpo AG and Alpiq. In 1972, in cooperation with the federal State (Swiss Confederation) these companies founded the National Co-operative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra).
The duties of Nagra are:
Keeping an inventory of all radioactive waste in Switzerland
Planning deep geological repositories for the disposal of all categories of radioactive waste
Carrying out geological studies to identify potential areas and propose suitable sites
Elaborating of potential sites for deep geological repositories
Providing demonstrations of safety and feasibility for deep geological repositories
Promoting international co-operation on research and development
