National Co-operative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste

The safe disposal of radioactive waste is the responsibility of those operators who produce it, namely BKW FMB Energie AG, KKW Gösgen-Däniken AG, KKW Leibstadt AG, Axpo AG and Alpiq. In 1972, in cooperation with the federal State (Swiss Confederation) these companies founded the National Co-operative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra).
The duties of Nagra are:
- Keeping an inventory of all radioactive waste in Switzerland
- Planning deep geological repositories for the disposal of all categories of radioactive waste
- Carrying out geological studies to identify potential areas and propose suitable sites
- Elaborating of potential sites for deep geological repositories
- Providing demonstrations of safety and feasibility for deep geological repositories
- Promoting international co-operation on research and development
