Radioactive waste
Radioactive waste is produced primarily during the utilisation of nuclear energy, but to a lesser extent also in the healthcare, industry and research sectors. A fundamental distinction is made between high-level waste and low and intermediate level waste. Depending on the source of the waste, either the nuclear power plant operators or the federal State (Swiss Confederation) is responsible.

Waste that arises from the production of nuclear power is the responsibility of the plant operators. Such waste consists of protective clothing, fuel rods and waste arising from decommissioned nuclear power plants.
Waste from healthcare, industry and research is the responsibility of the Swiss Confederation. Such includes waste arising from radiation therapy, smoke detectors, luminous dials or waste from decommissioned research reactors.
