Revitalisation and expansion of small hydropower

There is enormous potential in Switzerland for revitalising and reactivating small hydropower plants. There are numerous plants that have been decommissioned, and in most cases it would be possible to increase productivity by between 30 and 100 percent by installing more modern equipment and changing the operating point.

Of the around 7,000 small hydropower plants that were in operation in Switzerland at the beginning of the 20th century, only about 700 are still in use today, but the tendency is upwards.

However, the goal is not to reactivate all 7,000 plants, many of which were used for supplying electricity to small-scale industrial enterprises, and would either be too small to operate economically or cannot be reactivated for ecological reasons.
