Thermal energy that is obtained during the waste incineration process can be used in a variety of ways. Apart from producing electricity, most waste incineration plants in Switzerland also separate the resulting process steam and district heat. The heat obtained from waste incineration is a reliable, economically competitive and ecological form of energy. It helps reduce the consumption of fossil energy and thus cut CO2 emissions. "SwissEnergy for infrastructure plants" therefore wants to actively promote the marketing of district heat, and for this purpose it supports operators of waste incineration plants by providing neutral consulting services. Studies have shown that there is still a great deal of potential for the separation of district heat from waste incineration plants in Switzerland: in theory it would be possible to double the output by 2035.
