Water supply companies account for more than 20 percent of the consumption of electricity for public services in municipalities. The energy requirement for the extraction, processing and distribution of drinking water is thus very high. Here it would be possible to significantly reduce energy consumption by optimising the various systems and processes, and using more efficient pumps. In some municipalities the option exists of using water in the supply network for producing electricity or heat, without interfering with the quality of the drinking water.
