Sewage treatment plants account for more than 10 percent of the electricity consumption for public services in Switzerland's municipalities. However, some of these plants also produce energy: electricity and heat from sewage gas cogeneration plants, and heat from waste water. Thanks to support from "SwissEnergy for infrastructure plants", operators of sewage treatment plants throughout Switzerland were able to cut their energy costs by 24 percent in the period from 1992 to 2001.
"Energie in ARA" ("Energy from sewage treatment plants"), a manual that is now widely known both in Switzerland and abroad, has been revised and updated to include a variety of new topics and reflect the latest status of technology. Copies may be ordered from the SFOE or directly from the VSA (Swiss Water Pollution Control Association) – see "Related documents").
