Waste water, too, can be used for heating and cooling buildings. This is possible since in winter waste water is considerably warmer than the outside air, and in the summer it is much cooler. Approximately 300 waste water heating systems are in use in Switzerland today, but according to studies carried out by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, it would be possible to supply around 5 percent of all buildings with waster water heat. The proximity of a large waste water canal or sewage treatment plant is necessary in order to ensure that the use of waste water energy is economically viable.
