The Swiss Solar Cadastre will provide information about the suitability of the roofs of the country's buildings for utilising solar energy. A simple method is being applied in order to calculate how much solar electricity or solar heat could be produced from facilities installed on roof surfaces in Switzerland. The new cadastre will also be integrated into the existing range of advisory services provided by SwissEnergy relating to the use of solar energy.
The Swiss Solar Cadastre is being compiled by simulating the course of the sun throughout the year and calculating the level of solar radiation reaching roof surfaces. The sunlight data are being provided by MeteoSwiss, while the geodata relating to the roofs of buildings are being obtained from the swisstopo product, "swissBUILDINGS3D". The latter is currently undergoing development and is not yet available for the entire country (the current degree of coverage and the schedule for the collection of geodata can be viewed by visiting the swisstopo website). This means that, when it is initially published, the Swiss Solar Cadastre will not yet encompass the entire country. It will be updated, however, as "swissBUILDINGS3D" is further developed.
