The Swiss Federal Geoinformation Act forms the legal basis for ensuring that up-to-date geodata are placed at the disposal of a broad variety of users and with the necessary degree of quality. For this purpose, the Federal Council has produced a catalogue of official geodata and designated the federal authority that is responsible for each specific dataset. Within the framework of its designated responsibility, each federal authority is required to define its own basic model for official geodata sets. A basic geodata model defines the reality, structure and content of non-system-related geodata, and from the point of view of the federal administration (and where applicable the cantons) it should only contain the most important and essential items.
In addition to the official Swiss geodata, the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) is now making other thematic geodata publicly available. These data can be viewed in the federal government's map viewer or directly on this web site.
