The Wind energy research, pilot and demonstration projects programme promotes the continual development of technology for the use of wind energy. Based on specific practical experience and identified optimisation potentials, research is to focus on the following areas: 

• Quantification of losses in yield and hours of standstill due to ice formation; identification and evaluation of measures.
• Reduction of electricity production costs by increasing the duration of operation at full-load and the degree of availability, and by improving the accuracy of yield calculations.
• Reduction of construction and planning costs by shortening the period of realisation of projects, taking account of the degree of acceptance.

In addition to supporting projects of private and public research institutions, the programme also wants to close certain gaps in know-how, promote the further development of promising technologies and demonstrate the status of technology for more widespread application. 
Alongside energy-related aspects, the programme also aims to study the environmental aspects of energy production from wind. The goal here is to ensure that no harm is caused to the environment through the use of renewable forms of energy.
