Projects currently exist in the following fields of research:

Hydrogen production

Here the focus is on sustainable production of hydrogen from renewable sources, e.g. solar energy (photochemical and solar thermal water splitting) and hydropower (high-pressure electrolysis).

Hydrogen storage

The Swiss Federal Materials Testing and Research Laboratories (EMPA) and the University of Geneva have been acquiring expertise in the area of hydrogen storage in metal hydrides and other solid materials for many years.

Practical application (pilot and demonstration projects)

Due to budget cuts, the SFOE has directly supported very few pilot and demonstration projects over the past few years. The pilot and demonstration programme for hydrogen is currently being restructured.
