Within the scope of the Radioactive Waste research programme, regulatory research activities of the federal government are co-ordinated and a variety of technical and scientific, as well as social and educational, projects are implemented.

The programme was developed in 2006/07 by a workgroup comprising representatives from the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE), the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate, the Swiss Federal Commission for Nuclear Waste Disposal, the Commission for the Safety of Nuclear Facilities and a college of technology. In September 2008 the Swiss Federal Workgroup for Nuclear Waste formally approved the programme. The Radioactive waste research programme covers the federal government's research requirements in the area of radioactive waste disposal until 2016. The SFOE is responsible for the scientific projects, while the Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate is responsible for regulatory safety research.
