Switzerland's cross-border high-voltage network has high transmission capacities into all neighbouring countries, and this has consequences in terms of international electricity trading. Networks are subject to national legislation, but they nonetheless have to be internationally compatible.

The Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) supports the co-ordination of international research with the EU and the IEA (International Energy Agency) in the area of networks.
