Welcome to the Power plant 2020/CCS research programme of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE)
(CCS = carbon capture and storage)
In 2020 or thereabouts, Switzerland's oldest nuclear power plants will be decommissioned and its long-term electricity import agreements with France are due to expire. This situation means that Switzerland will have to anticipate a gap in its electricity supply. To overcome this supply shortfall, the most important measure is to significantly increase the degree of energy efficiency. In order to close the still existing gap on the production side, the proportion of renewable energy needs to be increased to the greatest possible extent, and the remaining electricity demand has to be met through the use of highly efficient conventional production technologies. One of the main options open to us here is the use of advanced cogeneration plants.
