With ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor), international research institutions want to demonstrate the technical feasibility of the use of nuclear fusion. And with DEMO the intention is to demonstrate the commercial feasibility of nuclear fusion by the middle of this century. At the same time as ITER is undergoing development, the testing facilities at the Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, are to be used until at least 2020 for the purpose of testing and optimising concepts, components and systems associated with the use of an ITER (and later, DEMO). Swiss nuclear fusion research is focusing strongly on the integration of magnetic plasma and on various nuclear technologies such as energy coupling, supraconductivity and material sciences).
