In order for it to effectively perform its duties as supervisory authority for nuclear installations, it is essential for the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) to keep pace with the latest status of science and technology. In view of this, it supports and coordinates projects relating to regulatory safety research. This research programme defines principles for supervisory activity, promotes education and the preservation of expertise, and contributes towards international exchanges of findings. It focuses on fuels and materials, internal incidents and damage, external incidents, human factors, system behaviour and malfunctions, radiation protection, waste disposal. The various projects are intended to facilitate the identification of potential problems, the development of improvements, the reduction of uncertainties and the improvement of procedures, and thus to contribute towards the preservation and improvement of the high degree of safety of Swiss nuclear installations.
