In Switzerland, almost all nuclear energy research (nuclear fission) is carried out at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI). Here, the focus of activities is on ensuring the safe operation of Swiss nuclear power plants, developing innovative safety concepts, the optimal use of nuclear fuels and long-term solutions for the disposal of radioactive waste. In addition, exploratory research is being carried out into high-temperature materials and neutronics of fast reactors, which are important for future sustainable nuclear power plants such as those that are the centre of focus of the international Generation IV initiative. This programme, which is aimed at developing more efficient and safer energy systems, calls for comprehensive expertise in areas associated with complex, large-scale systems. It is primarily based on the major systems at the PSI.
