The research programmes

The main objectives of energy research in Switzerland are to guarantee a secure and sustainable energy supply, promote Switzerland as a centre of technological research and development, and maintain the high quality of Swiss research. Publicly funded energy research is carried out in line with the federal government energy research concept, which is updated every four years by the Swiss Federal Energy Research Commission (CORE).

According to CORE, the use of biomass as an energy source is to be at least tripled by 2050 (current utilisation, 53 PJ).

Reasons for the formation of the Biomass and Wood Energy research programmes

Biomass and wood energy are characterised by a broad variety of forms, many available conversion technologies and flexibility in the production of energy (heat, electricity and motor fuels). In terms of utilisation, this results in a certain amount of competition but also gives rise to synergies. Taking account of the relevant ecological aspects, the long-term potential (up to 2040) for the use of biomass for energy production is around 126 PJ per annum (primary energy). At present, only 42 percent (or 53 PJ) is utilised for energy purposes. Here, 92 percent is used for heat, 7 percent for electricity and 1 percent for motor fuels. Switzerland is strongly networked (IEA and EU networks) in biomass and wood energy research.
