Objectives / concepts

The following priorities were defined for the biomass and wood energy sector in the federal energy research concept for the period from 2013 to 2016; the plan was prepared by the Swiss Federal Energy Research Commission (CORE):

  • Development of new processes and technology,
  • Scaling up or downsizing of market-related processes,
  • System optimization, integration and expansion, and
  • Quality assurance.

A broad variety of conversion and transformation methods are used in the biomass and wood energy sector, a fact which makes this field of research extremely complex (see diagram). The research priorities cited above apply to (and research activities are promoted in) the three technologies that are of importance to Switzerland - namely combustion, gasification and anaerobic fermentation.
